Color Theory Applies to all mediums. |
Here are some tips that I want to share with you, I applied color theory to this piece in several ways. |
1. I always use the color wheel to select my background color. The cherries are a Red-Orange color, the rose is Yellow-Orange plus I have Yellow-Green leaves so I selected a Blue-Violet background. Colors always looks very good next to its complementary colors. They complement each other. |
2. I wanted to match the color of the acrylic’s top background with the colored pencils. The background is a cool, dull Blue-Violet. I had a pencil that was a vibrant Red-Violet . What color do you think I added to it to make it duller and cooler? You can see it in the colored pencil’s mix at the lower section of the piece, underneath the tablecloth. It was also added to the lower section of the top acrylic’s background. Please answer without looking at the color wheel. |
The answer is green. |
I would like to explain how you can decide what color to use without looking at the color wheel. |
The main purpose of adding the green was to lower the intensity of the Red-Violet color. |
There are several ways to lower the intensity of a color:1. Adding its Complement (I like this one), 2. Adding White, 3. Adding an Earthtone Color, 4. Adding Black or Grey. |
An easy way to find the complement of a color is by going to your Primary colors: Red, Yellow and Blue. The complement of Red is Green (Yellow + Blue). Note: you add the colors left from the Primary colors. What is the complement of Violet? |
The complement of Violet (Red + Blue) is Yellow. What is the complement of Blue? |
The complement of Blue is Orange (Yellow + Red). |
Now going back to my Red-Violet intense and vibrant color. I wanted to lower the intensity and I knew it already had red and blue. What Primary colors were missing? |
Yellow was missing. The color was more toward Red and I wanted to cool it down so I wanted to also add blue. Yellow + Blue = Green. |
