There are several ways to blend with colored pencils. |
1. The first method- Using a color that has been applied as basecoat on that area. The first application of color in that area is the color I use to blend a line created by a separation of values. For Example: I basecoated with Cream, Shaded with Yellow Ochre first, and then with Burnt Sienna. If I have a line between the Yellow Ochre and the Burnt Sienna, I will use Cream which was the first color applied and blend that line in a zig zag motion. Colored pencils are transparent and the Cream has been mixed with the other two colors, Yellow Ochre and Burnt Sienna. Therefore, Cream is already in the mix. |
2. The Second Method – Using a Colorless Blender to blend your colors. |
3. The Third Method – Using Gamsol. |
4. The Fourth Method – Applying a light color used in that area all over everything that needs to be blended. |
5. The Fifth Method- Using a Scrubber Brush. |
6. The Sixth Method – Applying White. |
What is suede matboard?
The brand that I use is Crescent Moorman. It’s a high quality fabric matboard that is fade and bleed resistant and has a premium white conservation core and backing.
A drawing can be transferred to the suede board with graphite. The suede fabric is very receptive to graphite so when transferring a drawing to the board, make sure it’s not going on too dark.
If pigment needs to be removed from suede board, first lay a piece of Scotch transparent tape on the offending color and scratch the top of the tape with your fingernail. Gently lift the tape and this will remove color. Another method, if using Lyra Polycolor, is to dab at the color with a Lyra kneaded eraser and pigment will be removed. A stain may remain, it depends on how much pigment is embedded in the suede.

Comment: Someone complained about the noise when I sharpen the pencils. Most of the times I remove that from my videos but I was trying to do less cuts in these videos so you could have them this weekend. Also, these videos were uploaded to Youtube. We normally use Vimeo and set them up to High Definition which takes much longer to upload. High Definition videos take at least 24 hours a piece to upload. The videos that we will use for the club will have the High Definition setting and will be uploaded to Vimeo. Please come back to Tolebrush.com to register for the Colored Pencils Club. How to use rubber stamps and embossing powder |
Press the stamp on the Archival Ink pad and then press hard on the surface, being careful not to move it. Immediately pour embossing powder on top of the stamped area, covering it completely. I use a small spoon to spread the embossing powder. Remove the excess embossing powder by turning the piece upside down and gently tapping it without touching the stamped area. Apply heat with the heat gun until the powder turns shiny. |

Colored Pencils Theory |
Light colors have more wax than dark colors therefore when you are using light colors you are bringing the element of wax to your painting. The color that has the most wax is White. For that reason, I don’t use White until the end unless the area I am painting is pure White. |
If I need to lighten a color I use Cream or a light grey.If you need an area to be White you will have to apply only White from the beginning of your painting. If you add another color, it no longer will be White. |
Colored pencils are transparent and you have to treat them as if they were wet. In this aspect they are very similar to oils. Once you apply a color on top of the other they will blend. Contrary to acrylics, you can apply opaque applications of a color on top of another. For example, with acrylics you can paint White on top of another color and it will be White. Once you have this concept in mind it would help in your painting process. |
If you were not able to maintain an area of pure White, you can apply acrylics White on top of your colored pencils to make that area White again. Depending on the effect that you want to create you can either apply washes or opaque applications of acrylic colors. |
During the following weeks I will create a short film on how to paint these cherries. It will be a youtube video with public access. I will post an announcement on Facebook the day it is posted on Youtube. I would love to have you as my Facebook friend. Visit – https://www.facebook.com/nildarosarodriguez |
Mixing your own black in your palette will have greater results in your painting pieces. Below are some tips on mixing the color black.
Colored Pencils
Mixing your own black with colored pencils:
Indigo Blue + Black Grape + Tuscan Red + Dark Green
Depending on your palette vary the order in which you apply the colors above.
Oil Painting
Mixing your own black with oils:
French Ultramarine Blue + Burnt Umber (about same amounts of each color)
Test your color to the side by adding Titanium White and if it is too blue, add
more Burnt Umber. If it is too Brown, add French Ultramarine Blue.
Acrylics Painting
The DecoArt Americana paint called Ebony or Lamp Black is a cool Black. If you
mix it with Titanium or Snow White, you will see it has more blue in it than brown. To warm it, add Burnt Umber to it.
Different ways to mix black with Oil or Acrylic paints
1. French Ultramarine Blue + Burnt Umber
2.Prussian Blue (which is often a mix of Phthalo Blue and Black) with Burnt Umber.
If you don’t have Burnt Umber you could use Burnt Sienna or Raw Umber, however, taking in mind that Raw Umber is more of a green brown and Burnt Sienna has a red tone.
Take a piece of poster board or matt board and paint a swatch of each of these mixes and keep it in a file for reference. Play with color mixing, it is fun, and will open new horizons into your paintings.

What is Wax Bloom?
Wax bloom is a white haze that appears on some colored pencils project because a layer of wax rises to the surface. It happens to heavily worked areas, to areas painted with Black, or even to colored pencil pieces that have been sitting around for weeks.
How to Remove it?
1. First wipe softly the surface with a soft cloth. Sometimes this will do the trick.
2. Use Workable Fixatif. Fixatif can change your colors so if you decide to use this method test it first. Paint a strip of each color used in your project in a piece of paper. Fold the paper so that you cover half of these strips and leave the other half uncovered. Spray with fixatif the uncovered half. Unfold the piece of paper and you will know if your colors have changed.
3. Use of gamsol will break down the wax component and turn your pencil into pure pigment. Remember if you use gamsol I recommend to apply another layer of colored pencil, unless you are applying it to pure Black.
