The Color Black
Mixing your own black in your palette will have greater results in your painting pieces. Below are some tips on mixing the color black.
Colored Pencils
Mixing your own black with colored pencils:
Indigo Blue + Black Grape + Tuscan Red + Dark Green
Depending on your palette vary the order in which you apply the colors above.
Oil Painting
Mixing your own black with oils:
French Ultramarine Blue + Burnt Umber (about same amounts of each color)
Test your color to the side by adding Titanium White and if it is too blue, add
more Burnt Umber. If it is too Brown, add French Ultramarine Blue.
Acrylics Painting
The DecoArt Americana paint called Ebony or Lamp Black is a cool Black. If you
mix it with Titanium or Snow White, you will see it has more blue in it than brown. To warm it, add Burnt Umber to it.
Different ways to mix black with Oil or Acrylic paints
1. French Ultramarine Blue + Burnt Umber
2.Prussian Blue (which is often a mix of Phthalo Blue and Black) with Burnt Umber.
If you don’t have Burnt Umber you could use Burnt Sienna or Raw Umber, however, taking in mind that Raw Umber is more of a green brown and Burnt Sienna has a red tone.
Take a piece of poster board or matt board and paint a swatch of each of these mixes and keep it in a file for reference. Play with color mixing, it is fun, and will open new horizons into your paintings.
