Painting Gold – Tips and Techniques
Painting Gold – Tips and Techniques |
Tip #1
Mix a value range of a Raw Sienna color. Tip #2 Raw Sienna = Violet Mix + small amounts of Cadmium Yellow Pale Violet Mix = Ultramarine Blue + Alizarin Crimson (about same amounts) Tip #3 Gold is a metal and in order to make it shine you need to have contrast between lights and dark. Tip #4 Gold is in the Yellow/Orange Family. I apply tints of orange and tints of yellow. Tip #5 Metal reflects the objects around it. Tip #6 I like to highlight Gold with Yellow Tint first. Yellow Tint = Cadmium Yellow + small amount of Titanium White Tip #7 I use the Violet mix for the darkest areas of the gold piece. Tip #8 Raw Sienna is a dull yellow as it has green in it. Yellow + Blue = Green. To make the Raw Sienna sparkle you add shines of yellow.

Colored Pencils |
The picture to the left is a small preview of the new piece in colored pencils called Chocolates. It is similar to the Fall Treats colored pencils’ piece to the right. Instead of repainting the Fall Treats piece, in order to write the instructions, I decided to paint a different version. |
Notice that all the tips above for oil paintings were applied to the piece in colored pencils. The only difference is that in colored pencils you already have some of the colors mixed for you. |
